How Many Players On A Hockey Team?

In hockey, a team typically consists of six players on the ice at any given time, including one goaltender and five skaters. These skaters are usually divided the following positions:

  • left wing
  • center
  • right wing
  • defensemen x 2

However, during gameplay, teams can substitute players from their bench as needed, allowing for a much larger total roster size.

NHL teams have 23 players on their roster, but may have fewer due to salary considerations. Only 20 players dress for each game: 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 2 goalies, leaving some as healthy scratches.
