Every season, some teams' draft and free agency choices leave fans scratching their heads. Let's explore which fans should be most concerned about their running back depth and how to approach it from a fantasy football perspective!
Projected Starter: Ezekiel Elliott | Handcuff: Rico Dowdle
The Dallas Cowboys surprised fans with Ezekiel Elliott's return to the running back room. While some hoped for a Derrick Henry caliber addition, Zeke and Royce Freeman were the key offseason additions to their roster at running back. The team is only spending an average of around $4.5M per year on their top 3 RBs, which includes Zeke, Royce Freeman and Rico Dowdle.
Initially, Dowdle seemed like the fantasy football winner with the Cowboys' RB situation. But with Elliott's return, Dowdle's role shifts to a backup. Nonetheless, he remains a top handcuff option for fantasy football managers this season.
Dowdle's smaller size at 215lbs may limit his goal-line opportunities compared to Zeke at 225lbs. In past seasons, Zeke dominated goal-line carries even when sharing the backfield with Pollard, who has a similar build to Dowdle.
We primarily see Zeke as a running back you can rely on to start the year, but there's a chance he could be replaced or sidelined due to injury after a few weeks. While he may not warrant RB1 status, Dowdle runs hard and he has minimal wear and tear. Moreover, his inexpensive prove-it contract should serve as a strong motivator.
Just based on their current lack of depth in the running back room, many casual observers would suggest, 'Why not sign Dalvin Cook?' He's a big name. But it's clear that the Dallas coaching staff is seeing what many Vikings and Jets fans saw first-hand: he's no longer the bell-cow back he once was. Dalvin used to be a slippery back, making small cuts and slipping by defenders. However, last season it became apparent that he lost that burst, leading to just 3.2 yards per carry. He was even PFF’s No. 52 graded RB among 57 qualifiers.
Whether Dowdle helps you secure a crucial win in a single week or contributes to your championship journey, make sure to grab a fantasy football trophy for your league winner.
